Malawi’s main attraction is the lake: a magnificent body of sparkling water commonly known as the calendar lake as it’s proportions are roughly 365 miles long by 52 miles wide in some places. Isolated villages pepper the northern lakeshore and the beautiful Liwonde National Park rests at its southern tip. Around 500 species of fish inhabit the lake and the freshwater diving and snorkelling here are excellent. Malawi’s not just for water babies and sun worshippers though; there’s plenty to keep you active and Malawi’s landscape is surprisingly diverse. Head for the misty heights of Mount Mulanje or to the Nyika National Park at 2,600 meters above sea level offers 660 species of orchids, huge herds of eland and other antelope along with the second highest population density of leopards in Africa in a highland landscape. Majete Wildlife reserve in Southern Malawi has two lodges and the park now offers ‘The Big Five’.
